Tips for Saving on Fuel
Fuel prices have been on the rise this year, and that may have RV owners asking how they can make the most of their fuel mileage.
The good news is that you can control how much you spend on fuel – it all depends on where you’re going, the type of terrain you’ll be traveling over, how long your trips are, how large your RV is, etc. That’s the beauty of RV travel – you make all the decisions!
If you are trying to keep fuel costs down, there are some things you can do to help:
- Purchase a smaller, towable RV. Smaller units weigh less, which means they use less fuel. If you prefer a motorized RV, the van-style, Class B RVs are extremely popular right now. These efficient, compact-size RVs get great mileage.
- Pack efficiently. Don’t bring along things you won’t need to keep the weight of your RV down. And don’t buy groceries or fill your water tank until you get to your site.
- Park your trailer. Find a campsite that is comfortable and convenient and leave your trailer there.
- Make your trips shorter. There are tons of incredible places to camp across the country, which means you don’t always have to take long trips. RV camping is fun regardless of the destination so don’t feel like you have to drive hundreds of miles.
- Don’t be a lead foot. This one can be difficult because we all like to get where we’re going so the fun can begin. However, if you drive the speed limit, accelerate at one-quarter or half throttle and brake correctly, tests show you can save up to 30 percent in fuel savings.
- Go the diesel route. Did you realize that diesel fuel delivers 10-15 percent more energy than gas? Regardless of whether you have a motorhome or a towable unit, you can add 20-35 percent better gas mileage with diesel versus gasoline (and diesel is generally less expensive than most higher-grade gases.)
- Use your cruise control. If you use your cruise control on long, flat stretches of roads, it will save fuel.
- Regularly check your tire pressure. Keeping your vehicle properly inflated helps with fuel mileage.
- Make sure your engine is properly maintained. Keeping your motor is performing at the top level aids in fuel efficiency. Make sure you change the oil and filters regularly.
- Shut the engine off. If you know you’re going to be stopping for more than a minute or two, turn the engine off instead of letting it idle.
